Who is Pastor & Photographer David Waters?
Well, I was a professional photographer long before I got into the ministry. I bought my first camera, a Minolta XRT-100, in 1976 while stationed at Peterson AFB in Colorado. Living in Colorado Springs put me close to the Rockies, so I spent every spare moment taking photos. On a two-week mountain trip I badly injured my left knee. I finished the trip, but back home military doctors said I couldn’t run and I had to leave the Air Force. In July of 1978, I was medically retired.
I returned to Texas to study photography at East Texas State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in 1981. After graduation I spent the next 13 years working as a medical photographer at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock. I gained valuable technical experience and a careful eye for detail. In 1994, I left the medical field and for the next five years my wife Karen and I lived and traveled in a motorhome, selling photographs and handmade wooden pens and pencils at craft shows and fairs across the country. The constant travel and non-stop craft shows eventually wore me out, and after much prayer about our future direction, In 1999, I answered the Lord’s calling to become a Baptist missionary in a small church in Chino Valley, Arizona. Six years into that ministry I became the pastor and served the congregation for 18 meaningful years before retiring in 2017. Since retiring we’ve lived in Virginia and Arkansas, and now after 47 years, we are living back in Colorado Springs.
Photography itself has changed dramatically over the years: once, it was a film business—Kodachrome, Ektachrome, and many black-and-white stocks. During this period, my go-to camera was the massive Mamiya RB-67, I named, “Big Bertha.” I loved the medium format she produced. But, photography and I were had to completely transform when digital technology arrived. I was skeptical at first, I tried various digital cameras however, I wasn’t impressed by the early results. And then, Old Betsy, a Nikon D-800 came into my life and changed the way I was to capture photographs. Now I’m pleased to share my work with you. I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed creating them. God bless, and please remember to go to church this Sunday.
