“O’ beautiful for spacious skies,
for amber waves of grain,
for purple mountains majesty,
above the fruited plain.”

Snow in the Garden
A/001
Unfortunately, relatively few people get to witness the amazing transformation that takes place during winter at the Garden of the Gods. One cold morning I rose early and made a beeline for the park, and was rewarded with golden streams of light as they poured through the rock formations. I hope you enjoy the view.

America’s Mountain
A/002
What a mountain! People drive, hike, and ride the train up its winding slopes, and every 4th of July they race to the summit at over 14,000 feet. America’s mountain ushers in our New Year with a spectacular fireworks display launched from the very top, lighting the sky and valley below.
Red Rock

South of the Garden of the Gods you’ll find a charming “Mini Garden.” It’s a modest extension of the red monoliths that define the Garden, offering the same rugged character on a smaller scale. While it may not be as grand, its hiking trails are inviting and just waiting for the next visitor to fall in love with the park’s quieter beauty. And yes — dogs adore it too.

The Gold Rush Was On
A/004
Peace and quiet abound in the mountains today. But it certainly wasn’t so during the “Gold Rush” days. This area once was home to well over 100,000 people, and just about every one of them had the fever. Beyond mining, the two biggest businesses in the region were bars and brothels, catering to the rush of hopeful prospectors. It was the wild west at its most unruly and untamed.

Forces of Nature
A/005
These striking rock formations that make up Garden of the Gods were considered sacred by many Native tribes for generations. The last of those peoples to call the area home were the Ute, whose deep connection to the land is still remembered today. Modern visitors now replace the sounds of horses and drums with the chatter of tour groups and the voices of bus guides sharing stories about this remarkable park. If you come to Colorado Springs, a visit to the Garden of the Gods is an absolute must-see.
Prescott, Arizona
One of the “8th Wonders of Arizona” Watson Lake.
A/006
Located just north of Prescott sits this charming “Boulder Bowl” of a lake. The water is cool and crystal-clear, inviting canoeists and kayakers from across Arizona to gently paddle its calm, mirror-like surface. Nestled in the cool high country, the lake offers refreshing, pine-scented air and sweeping scenic views that delight visitors year-round.
Falls at Sunset, Arkansas

If you’ve ever wondered what Eden must have looked like, I believe Arkansas gives you a beautiful hint. Here, the trees wear a special, vibrant green; the sunsets spill the perfect “golden hour” light; and you are never far from the gentle, soothing sound of rushing water.

A Different Kind of Gold
A/008
Colorado is famous for two kinds of gold. One is metallic, buried and worked by miners, and the other is organic, a blazing display supplied each autumn by the incredible aspen. As the days become shorter and light softens, there is an explosion of golden color that sweeps through the mountains. Because of the dramatic changes in elevation, this procession of color unfolds according to altitude, painting slopes in succession from high ridges down to valley floors. I have been coming to this canyon for almost 50 years. It’s one of the few places I photograph that has never changed: the same winding road, the same sturdy bridges, the same shadowed tunnels and the same clear, steady stream. I dearly love coming here and watching the familiar landscape turn to gold each season.

Those Were The Days
A/009
The prospect of discovering their own vein of gold drew thousands of men and women into these mountains. And even when you did find gold, there were always bars and brothels ready to take it away. Even the man who started it all with a discovery in Cripple Creek ended up penniless. For the miners, the work was grueling and often brutal. When a moment of relaxation did present itself, the choices were usually the same: a bar, a brothel, or bed.

If Only Barns Could Talk
It’s sad to see the slow demise of these wondrous structures. They once held the comforting sounds of cows and pigs and the rhythmic clip-clop of horses. Within their weathered walls, children played atop giant stacks of hay, and what a perfect place those barns were to gather and tell ghost stories on long summer evenings.

With a name like Waters, I think you’ll understand my lifelong fascination with cool, clear water. Whether it’s crashing on a windswept Pacific coast or gently flowing over sun-warmed rocks in its patient journey to the sea, I love the stuff—salt or fresh, wild or calm.
Pinion Falls, Arkansas
A/13
Our home was only about five minutes away from this waterfall. I’ve spent countless hours wandering up and down its rocky shore and have cherished nearly every moment there. Springtime in Arkansas brings steady, abundant rain, and whether the creek was a gentle trickle or a thundering roar, Pinion Creek never failed to yield unforgettable photographs.
Arkansas Countryside
A/014
One summer afternoon, my “shooting” partner — my wife — and I happened upon a quintessential, old-time farmstead, complete with a whole family gathered on the front porch. About fifty yards away from them stood this time-worn relic, quietly weathered by the years. Grandpa gave me permission to photograph his barn as long as I’d “sit a spell” with them. I did just that. What wonderful people.
